Tags: I love the way you can see vast amounts of time in this, mud laid down at the bottom of the ocean, over many millions of years, compressed by the weight of more mud above it, to become shale, then, many millions of years later, upended, cracked and folded and thrust upward, until the horizontal layers are inclined up at a steep angle, then exposed to wave after wave of ocean rising and falling, through the sea level changes of the Pleistocene, and at this moment, geologically speaking, it happens to be right there, at the interface between land and ocean, and it is washed and eroded by more waves, on shorter time scales, the yearly onslaught of winter storms, swelling and subsiding as weather systems track through, and the individual waves that were rolling in as the photo was taken, and then a shutter, real or virtual, froze this one moment, with all that history laid out.
