lies:

I’m looking forward to getting more backstory. It would have been even better if it featured the characters from the movie, rather than cardboard cutouts from a male-gaze-y AU.

And… yeah.

So, you know how there are different ways for a creative work to address horrible things done to a socially disadvantaged group? And one way, that I’ll call the GoT approach, involves depicting the horrible things on-camera, in some detail, framed to provoke shock and disgust, but also, in a subtle but disturbing way, engaging itself in the very behavior it purports to be calling out, by reducing the characters experiencing the degradation to victims without agency, repeatedly visiting horrors on them for no apparent narrative purpose beyond provoking shock and revulsion (and worse, a degree of exploitative titillation).

And then there’s a second way, that I’ll call the MMFR approach, in which the horrible things are left mostly off-camera, with the focus instead on the characters’ quest for an agency that goes beyond victimhood, for the recovery of their and their companions’ humanity, within a narrative frame that elevates acts of healing over acts of violence.

The Furiosa comic is more GoT than MMFR.
