The Battle of Trafalgar
21 October 1805
Today marks the celebration of Trafalgar Day! The Battle of Trafalgar took place on this day in history, 21 October 1805. It was a naval engagement between the Royal Navy and the combined fleets of the French and Spanish Navies during the War of the Third Coalition of the Napoleonic Wars. British victory spectacularly confirmed the naval supremacy that Britain had established during the previous century. The victory was achieved in part through Nelson’s departure from the prevailing naval tactical orthodoxy when he chose to deliberately cut the opposing fleet’s line in three rather than approach the enemy fleet in a single line of battle as was the custom. Nelson, however, was mortally wounded during the battle and became a British war hero as a result.
