Every Tuesday morning, three library staff go through the production of opening up the case housing a volume of Audubon’s “The Birds of America” to carefully turn a single page. With 435 pages in four volumes, it will take them over eight years before an illustration is repeated. I got to pick yesterday and I chose the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos), its massive body rendered to scale, wing tips pushing out of the margins, claws buried deep in the eye of its catch.
