Will Thacker, who was briefly married to noted actress Anna Scott, married his roommate Spike in a ceremony just after midnight.

I said if they changed the laws we’d marry immediatly. People thought I was kidding. I wasn’t.”

The happy couple is honeymooning in Ibiza.

Representatives for Anna Scott did not immediately respond to our request for comment.

Marriage equality comes to merry old England.

Reunited at last – my senior thesis painting ‘20 Miles East of Faith,’ 2011. Acrylic on panel, 13,5’ x 8’.

This work went through innumerable iterations before I settled on these dimensions and presentation. I wanted to create a work that was evocative and immersive, one that would suck the viewer in to the storm whether or not they wanted to participate.

This painting is an homage to the resilience of Midwestern agricultural leaders, to those individuals who rely on the land for their livelihood and who must endure as the landscape changes to create unavoidable challenges. There is nothing else between the person and the storm: they watch it coming, boiling on the distant horizon, unsure if those clouds carry promise or destruction.

photographer Yume Cyan has been shooting some magical long exposure photographs of fireflies in a forested area around Nagoya City, Japan. By keeping the camera’s shutter open at a low aperture Cyan captures every bioluminescent flash of each insect resulting in dotted light trails that criss-cross the frame.

We never get tired of fireflies.

Me neither.

Words Can Get In The Way – How to NOT Talk To Kids

SO. FUCKING. IMPORTANT.

Learning to speak to children in a constructive, positively reinforcing, non-abusive way (which was hard to unlearn due to my own abuse) is one of the most important things i have ever learned to do. It’s also dramatically changed how i speak with adults.

I screwed this one up today.

“When Game of Thrones started audiences didn’t really take to Sansa. And I would read the reviews and that was a very sad time for me. I am a very sensitive person. But then season three came along and everything changed. That was the best. I’ve become very defensive of my character.

theparisreview:

1) It must be credibly motivated, both as to the original situation and the dénouement.

2) It must be technically sound as to the methods of murder and detection.

3) It must be realistic in character, setting and atmosphere. It must be about real people in a real world.

4) It must have a sound story value apart from the mystery element: i.e., the investigation itself must be an adventure worth reading.

5) It must have enough essential simplicity to be explained easily when the time comes.

6) It must baffle a reasonably intelligent reader.

7) The solution must seem inevitable once revealed.

8) It must not try to do everything at once. If it is a puzzle story operating in a rather cool, reasonable atmosphere, it cannot also be a violent adventure or a passionate romance.

9) It must punish the criminal in one way or another, not necessarily by operation of the law…. If the detective fails to resolve the consequences of the crime, the story is an unresolved chord and leaves irritation behind it.

10) It must be honest with the reader.

Caspar David Friedrich
Wanderer above the Sea of Fog.

I was looking back at my older posts about Friedrich, and I found this one, which I came across in the tags and reblogged for imaginarycircus because she was curious how big A Walk at Dusk was:

I’d completely forgotten about that. But that’s how I met (sort of) halloweden. I’m so glad I did, because she is definitely one of the coolest people I follow. And since it’s documented that I follow the three coolest people on Tumblr, that’s saying something.

Fun fact: What imaginarycircus may not have realized is that Eden is actually only three inches tall, which makes A Walk at Dusk smaller than a postage stamp. Friedrich is famous for his miniatures, painted with a three-camel-hair brush and a jeweler’s loupe.

windandwater:

The music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that Bilbo forgot everything else, and was swept away into dark lands under strange moons, far over The Water and very far from his hobbit-hole under The Hill.

Thursday, March 27th, 2014

thebrainscoop:

Today was amazing for a million reasons.

I’m in Pasadena, CA – a few months ago I was contacted by the Advisory Council of Women at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to be their annual guest speaker for women’s history month. That was a huge deal for me, and it marks the launch of a three month long period of traveling around the States to talk about my work with The Brain Scoop and The Field Museum. It’s humbling, and incredible.

I got to sit in a seat in the room where engineers landed the Curiosity Rover on Mars; I saw the test model and stood in the grounds that they used to simulate that Martian surface; I suited up, endured an air bath, and visited the High Bay to witness firsthand how these teams come together to build spacecraft (in this case a machine for the Soil Moisture Active Passion mission); I met a hero of mind, Bobak Ferdowsi, whose Mohawk made him famous during Curiosity’s landing. And I gave a talk about the importance of science role-models to a fantastic group of passionate people who happily accepted my photos of skinned wolves, even as they ate lunch.

I’m so grateful for these opportunities, and meeting the enthusiastic scientists at JPL was an experience I will never forget. The world needs more unabashedly passionate people. We didn’t get into space because of technology – we made these advancements because of people, and that is so encouraging.

Two of my heroes — correction: THREE of my heroes — are in that last shot.
