Yellow-rumped Warbler

Order: Passeriformes

Family: Parulidae

This post is relevant to anonsally’s interests.

Well, also relevant to your own interests, lies! :)

This might actually be the exact picture that’s in my bird book.

Do the subspecies interbreed (? is that the word) in the areas where both exist? Otherwise I guess they would be considered separate species, but it makes me wonder what the offspring would look like.

Yes, Sibley shows some crosses. I’m sure there are people with access to research collections or who have specialized in the species who could go into more detail about the relationships between the various populations.

I’m pretty casual about them, and have been ever since, when I was a boy, the AOU combined the two previously separate species. These days I usually just say, yellow-rumped? Yeah, yellow-rumped. And move on. I should pay more attention, though, to see if I can actually identify a Myrtle’s race among all the Audubon’s I normally see.
