U.S. Women Are Dying Younger Than Their Mothers, and No One Knows Why
U.S. Women Are Dying Younger Than Their Mothers, and No One Knows Why:
While advancements in medicine and technology have prolonged life expectancy and decreased premature deaths overall, women in parts of the country have been left behind.
The “no one knows why” part of the headline is link-bait; there are people who have some good ideas about what’s going on quoted in the article. Uptick in smoking in the young-women demographic having had time to work its way to older ages, downward socioeconomic pressure on the least-educated (who are mostly responsible for the decline in life expectancy), decreasing access to health insurance among the poor.
It’s no big mystery. The mystery is why we, as a great and wealthy nation, allow it to continue, and even worsen.
