Meeting/selfieing with the cast & crew of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries at VidCon 2013 (click on the photos for high-res)

i just get a lot of motherly feels when I look at this photoset.

The thing that gets me is Jessica. Not just because of the I’m-the-bird-and-she’s-the-snake thing. Because she’s not doing that. I mean, she’s just this ordinary, friendly-looking (okay; super pretty) person. And I recognize the face as Caroline’s, more or less, but she’s not Caroline. Because I’m not hypnotized, and she’s not this ultimate personification of evil and beauty and comical foiled plots and LOOK AT ME AND DESPAIR!!

I don’t know how she does that. But she does. Because there it is (or isn’t, in this case).

Awesome.

Kym Karath (Gretl) couldn’t swim, so the original idea was to get Julie Andrews to catch her when the boat tips up and they all fall in the water. However, during the second take the boat toppled over so that Andrews fell to one side and Karath fell to the other. Heather Menzies-Urich (Louisa) had to save her instead. Andrews stated later she felt guilty about this for years.

Ok, but can we talk for a moment about how fabulous Friedrich falls?

I have personal insight into this scene.

As a child, I once fell out of a rowboat.

is there anything i could do to get this url?

Honestly? It’s doubtful. I’m pretty committed to keeping it myself. I’m not saying that feeling won’t eventually pass, and when it does there’s a good chance that someone will come up with it. And that someone could be you.

But probably not. I think you should set your heart on some other, more attainable goal.

6 Thermidor: Prêle (horsetail, scouring-rush, Equisetum spp.)

Okay, sweet, now we’re talking old.  Not “domesticated for thousands of years” old, this is “hung out with dinosaurs” old.  Equisetum is the only living genus of the family Equisetaceae…which is the only living family in the order Equisetales, which is the only living order in the class Equisetopsida.  Its relative Calamites is off being coal now.

What is Equisetum up to these days?  Oh, you know, the same old same-old.  Reproducing by spores, coating their stems with silicates and being used as fine sandpaper or metal polish, invading New Zealand.  Plant things.  Horsetail things.

We have Equisetum hyemale in my area and it’s super cool. I have it in my plant collection, actually. It gets its name scouring rush because the coarse plant can be used to clean pots and the like when you’re camping.

On Aging

Ok, so most of you are young enough to be my kids, but a lot of you worship people old enough to be my parents, or in too many cases,  the deceased.  Reading your comments makes me remember exactly how it was to be your age, with all the optimism, idealism, heartbreaks, crushes, fandom, focused rage, and libidinous wishes that are part of the first quarter of life.

Photos: Sharpest Views of the Cosmos Ever

Astronomers have built a new astro-camera that, when fitted onto the largest observatories on Earth, can snap photos of the universe twice as sharp as the famed Hubble Space Telescope.

With the newly developed technology, giant telescopes can reach their theoretical limits of resolution in visible light —something that was just not possible, until now, because of atmospheric turbulence causing blurry visible light images. (Related: The Largest Baby Star, Ever?)

“It was very exciting to see this new camera make the night sky look sharper than has ever before been possible,” said Laird Close, the project’s principal scientist at the University of Arizona in a press statement.

Called Adaptive Secondary Mirror (ASM), this new imaging technology sits high above the primary mirror of the telescope, working to counter the atmospheric turbulence by changing the shape of its thin curved glass mirror 1,000 times each second.

“As a result, we can see the visible sky more clearly than ever before,” said Close. “It’s almost like having a telescope with a 21-foot mirror in space.”

Ian knows the pass code on my phone.

Haha. I caught my son the other day about to post a comment as me on YouTube (because he was sitting at a computer that was logged in with my account). I’m pretty sure he wanted to be caught, because it was funny, and I doubt it would have been worth the effort to him without the comic payoff. So he entered it, and then just sat there grinning at me with his finger poised over the submit button until I noticed and stopped him.

The thing he was going to post: “I am creepy and old.” Based on this, which he enjoyed reading over my shoulder when I originally replied to it, and now quotes regularly:
