Where We’re Going, We Don’t Need Trails, 2013

by Danielle Hughson

Hiking off-trail is my favorite thing to do. Being on the maintained trail feels like being on the paved highway driving to the trailhead. Leaving the trail feels like the hike has actually begun.

There’s a responsibility in hiking off-trail. You have to not be an asshole in terms of chewing up the terrain. You have to know where you are (though ubiquitous GPS has taken away a lot of that challenge). You have to be careful not to fall down a cliff or get stuck in a blind alley. Your speed is going to drop to near zero sometimes. People will look at you funny in the rare event they notice you.

It’s worth it.
