Jeremy Brett was dying, and knew he was dying, in the last handful of episodes he filmed. According to his coworkers, near the end, he sank deeper and deeper into the character; being Sherlock Holmes seemed to be the only thing that gave him comfort.
I read the books before I ever saw a film version, and you’d be hard-pressed to find an actor as Holmes I don’t like, but Jeremy Brett was my first, and he will always be my Holmes.
