Just. If you have not read this book? Read it. It takes place in 1986 and has all these amazing musical references appropriate to the time and to my teenaged years. But it doesn’t matter whether you’re fifteen or fifty—you’ll likely fall in love.
I know Twilight is problematic and lord knows I had a lot of problems with it, but I still love the first book. It makes me really angry at the same time too. But it gets something about first love so right and it’s nice to see a female character in lust and unashamed about it for the most part.
But E&P nailed that same wonderful terror of being in love when you’re young for the first time. But in a much more realistic way. And without vampires. (I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with supernatural themes. Obviously. Or I wouldn’t be writing a series about Gorgons.)
And unlike Twilight, Eleanor & Park is beautifully written. I wasn’t completely sold on E&P until about a third of the way through, which in retrospect makes perfect sense. So if you read it and are like, “Katie. What are you talking about,” after ten pages? Keep going. KEEP GOING.
