XTC, “Love at First Sight”

I bet E & P really liked this song. Given their own relationship history and Eleanor’s views on Romeo and Juliet, I think they would have smirked every time they heard it. And I know it was all mixtapes for them, but my headcanon is that Park couldn’t bear to split up side one of Black Sea, so that tape was that whole side from start to finish.

  1. Respectable Street
  2. Generals and Majors
  3. Living Through Another Cuba
  4. Love at First Sight
  5. Rocket from a Bottle
  6. No Language in Our Lungs

So awesome.

bobbycaputo: Photographer Uses His iPhone to Capture One Photo…

Photographer Uses His iPhone to Capture One Photo Per Day of a Lonely Bur Oak

For 20 years, 52-year-old photojournalist Mark Hirsch drove by the lonely old Bur Oak two miles from his home in southwest Wisconsin without thinking to take its picture even once. Then, one evening, he took a particularly beautiful photo of the tree at sunset using his newly purchased iPhone.

It was just his way of testing out the phone’s camera (which he was very skeptical of) and, lo and behold, he was hooked. For a full year after that, starting on March 23, 2012, Hirsch took one photo per day of the towering Bur Oak, and he’s titled the resulting project “That Tree.”

Speaking to NPR, Hirsch explains that “That Tree” helped him to rediscover what it was like to take photos for himself and not just his job. There wasn’t a single day that he didn’t take a picture of the tree. Some show the tree basking in a glorious sunset, others feature his wife and two children, and one his dog Magnum, but like the Lighthouse project we shared last week, each photo is different and uniquely beautiful.

As you can see, not every photo is of the tree itself. Over time, Hirsch began to become acquainted with the little ecosystem that revolved around the tree, leading to photos of the animals that called the tree home, and the leaves that kept it alive:

The longer I spent down there, the greater my appreciation for what a unique force [this tree] was and what an impact it had on the quality of life around it. In that realm, in that microcosm of the world, it really is a tree of life

To learn more about the project, see the photo from any given day, or buy a first edition signed or unsigned photo book of “That Tree,” visit the projects website and/or Facebook page by following the respective links.

not as shaky as I expected, given the warning, but far prettier.

YouTube’s image-stabilization feature to the rescue, yay! The original was much worse.

But yeah, they’re like jewels. I feel bad for the plants, but I love looking at the beetles.

In which I see if I can make you nauseous via video of a geen leaf beetle (Trirhabda flavolimbata) crawling around on a mostly-defoliated coyote brush plant (Baccharis pilularis) at the Carpinteria salt marsh. The beetles have been having an outbreak there there for the last few months.

I think they’re cute, but even if you agree about that there’s still a chance of nausea due to my extremely poor cinematography skills, especially after I mounted the macro attachment to the iPhone and things got really shaky.

You can read more about these cute beetles (including blessedly stationary images) in the post I made earlier today.

“I read it because I finally talked myself into the idea (maybe call it the “Downton Abbey Effect”) that I could be interested in this story, as British and soapy as it may be. And I’m here to tell you (even without stupid zombies), if you’re a dude, and you’ve rejected this novel out of hand (despite its canonical status) because it’s “only for women,” you’re wrong. It IS a good story, and despite your own pride and prejudices about this novel (did you see what I did there?), there’s plenty of fun to be had.”

omg i love your url, i’ll give you my backup 7.6k blog for it if you let me have it :)

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

That’s very kind of you to offer. But I’m really fond of the lies Tumblr URL.

Can you explain what you’re suggesting in more detail? Since I registered this URL I regularly get requests like yours, in which people offer to trade URLs and/or followers with me. I don’t understand how that would even work. Don’t people choose to follow a blog because of the person operating it, and the choices that person makes in terms of what to reblog? If a URL is suddenly handed off to someone else, wouldn’t that be kind of a mean trick to play on those followers?

How does someone even get 7,600 followers?

Clearly I’m clueless.

10knotes:

“The closer he looks at the child, the less he sees … The more he looks at it, there’s nothing there. He fears that the more you look at him the less you see. There isn’t anything there.” – John Hughes

I feel bad for Cameron. But mostly this just makes me want to watch Sunday in the Park with George again.

Green leaf beetles (Trirhabda flavolimbata) at the Carpinteria…

Green leaf beetles (Trirhabda flavolimbata) at the Carpinteria Salt Marsh

I mentioned previously that I’m a volunteer docent at the Carpinteria salt marsh. I started off being mostly into birds, but in the spring of 2009 I started obsessing about bugs, and it was this beetle that started that. I was looking for invertebrates to photograph for Circus of the Spineless, when I discovered that there were large numbers of shiny green “caterpillars” (I thought) feeding on the coyote brush (Baccharis pilularis) at the marsh. I estimated that there were more than 500 of them in a single medium-sized bush.

It turns out they were actually beetle larvae. Over the next several weeks I watched as they turned into adult beetles and kept munching. By the end of the outbreak, in late May, much of the coyote brush along Ash Avenue had been completely defoliated. The first two shots above are from that 2009 outbreak; they show the larvae (left) and an adult beetle (right).

By the next year the coyote brush had bounced back. There were only a few leaf beetles at the marsh each of the next three springs, but this year they’re back in a big way. Once again, a lot of the marsh shrubbery has been eaten down to bare twigs.

I was out there yesterday and today gathering data as part of a citizen science project that I’ll write up in another post, and while I was there I took some photos.

The second row of photos above shows the effect the beetles have on the coyote brush. On the left is a plant that still has leaves (and beetles), on the right is one that’s already been eaten.

Finally, there’s a shot I took with the macro lens attachment I bought recently for my iPhone. It’s just a little dingus that slips over the end of the phone. I’m pretty impressed with the results, though I need to work on my focus skills. There isn’t much depth of field to work with.

Isn’t that beetle adorable?

fyanimaldiversity: Merlin (Falco columbarius)  The darkest…

Sunday, May 26th, 2013

fyanimaldiversity:

Merlin (Falco columbarius

  1. The darkest subspecies, this black  (F.c. suckleyi) has a heavily dark brown streaked belly and nearly solid head.[x]
  2. This male taiga (F.c.columbarius) is showing off his barred tail and wings. The streaking on his belly is a lighter brown, and he has a faint teardrop marking on his face. His uppersides are a dark steely blue.[x]
  3. Instead of the grey color, female merlins substitute shades of brown, like this darn brown female taiga.[x]
  4. Male prairies (F.c. richardsoni) have an even lighter tan streaking on the undersides and face, letting more of the white base color show through.[x]
  5.  The lightest of all American merlins, this female prairie has soft appearance due to the light sandy upperparts. [x]
  6. A pair of Europeans (F.c. aesalon ), showing off the sexual dimorphism. Female merlins of all subspecies are larger than males. Appearance wise, they look very similar to the American Taigas, though it is very possible that the old world merlins are their own separate species. [x]
  7. The bright apricot markings on it’s neck and face and lighter blue-grey back makes this male steppe (F.c. pallidus) look particularly colorful.[x]
  8. Looking at this site, this extremely light Kazakhstani male is probably   of the lymani subspecies. Unfortunatly this is the clearest picture of one I could find, the Asian merlins don’t seem to be photographed as often. He has only the slightest hint of brown near his shoulder, his face and neck white. From what I can see, the streaks on his belly are very narrow.[x]

Followers? Jayson. He’s my online friend from well before there was a Tumblr.

For the longest time I imagined his voice as that of the man in Dead Flag Blues. I no longer think that, but he still occupies the yes-he’s-that-awesome part of my brain.
