LBD and “The Book Was Waay Better Than The Movie”

lies:

Not trying to be contentious, but I’d appreciate if you could let me know where I’ve dismissed the opinions of others in the fandom on the grounds that only a few people are complaining about something. I’m not saying I haven’t done it, but I didn’t notice it at the time. If you’d point it out where I did that it may help me avoid it next time.

I was referring to this post. In particular: “…but in terms of raw numbers my guess is that there are more of us in the fandom who like what she does than who dislike it.”

Though actually it was Ian’s response to it that I saw, since I follow him, which then led me to check theopensea’s response. It seemed to me that they both objected to your saying the number of people who have an issue with RK were small (2 to 3). theopensea in particular addressed how “greater numbers do not equal correctness of opinion” which is what seemed to be the same debate in this current discussion.

Ah, thank you. For what it’s worth, I meant for that to be taken as saying that I think there probably are more people who like Rachel Kiley’s intended-to-be-humorous fourth-wall-breaking tweets than who dislike them. But I didn’t mean that should be grounds to silence or dismiss anyone. I was responding to the original commenter’s statement that I construed as an assertion that everyone dislikes Rachel’s tweets.

But I was wrong to construe it that way. The original commenter didn’t mean to include the fandom generally in her “we all” statement, as she explained to me. So my whole comment was arguing against a strawman that didn’t actually exist.

I realize that the people in the fandom who object to Rachel number many more than three. When I used that number I might have been thinking of the count of people whose anti-Rachel views tend to be communicated in a way I dislike, such that I make a point of avoiding their commentary. (Side note: that’s just something I do for my own peace of mind. I’m not saying they’re obligated to behave differently in order to make me happy. They have every right to say the things they do.) In any case, I agree that counting the noses of those who agree or disagree with something does not prove it right or wrong.

I think community sentiment as expressed in nose counts is potentially interesting. But I don’t think it’s a reliable indicator of truth. If I said that, I was wrong.
