Jonathan Schwarz of A Tiny Revolution has created some graphs after my own heart: Bush and Nixon Battle It Out (Update). Especially interesting to me is this one:
Let it not be said that Bush is a miserable failure at everything. If he keeps up the steady progress he’s been making, he’ll have Nixon beat. And that’s saying something.

Back in 2001, ABCNEWS.com ran an article on approval ratings called “Poll: Good Job by the Bad-Boy President” (guess who.) It’s pretty interesting. In analyzing the end-of-Presidency Job Approval ratings of American Presidents, it found that the two highest were Bill Clinton, at 65%, and Ronald Reagan, at 64%.
John Kennedy came in third at 63% and the first George Bush placed fifth at 56% – three percentage points above Gerald Ford and 14 percentage points above Lyndon Johnson.
The two lowest were Jimmy Carter, at 34%, and Richard Nixon – who left office at 24%.

There’s also an interesting article on USATODAY.com regarding approval ratings that I found pretty interesting.
The main gist of the article regards Bush’s plummeting approval ratings (as of 10/17, 2005,) but what is most interesting, from a historical prospective, is its comparison of various modern presidents and their lowest ebb in the approval ratings.
Richard Nixon’s 24% is still the lowest, but Jimmy Carter’s career lowpoint of 28% beats him by only 4 percentage points. Clinton, who ended his presidency on the highest note of all had a one-time approval rating of 37% (on par with Gerald Ford’s lowest point,) and two percentage points above Reagan’s lowest rating.

As of May 2, Bush was at a 34% approval rating, which is not an “all time low,” as it’s still 6 percentage points above Carter’s lowest rating (wow.)
The Kentucky Derby is this weekend, and I’m from Louisville, so I’ll put it on the line and say that, if I were betting, that Bush will end his presidency at least as well regarded as Carter was at the time of his departure from Washington. Maybe “well regarded” is stretching things a bit for both Carter and Bush – but we are dealing with the bottom of the pile here.

31% USA TODAY/Gallup Poll

29% Harris Interactive
President Bush’s job-approval rating has fallen to its lowest mark of his presidency, according to a new Harris Interactive poll. Of 1,003 U.S. adults surveyed in a telephone poll, 29% think Mr. Bush is doing an “excellent or pretty good” job as president, down from 35% in April and significantly lower than 43% in January. Approval ratings for Congress overall also sank, and now stand at 18%.
Roughly one-quarter of U.S. adults say “things in the country are going in the right direction,” while 69% say “things have pretty seriously gotten off on the wrong track.” This has been the trend since January, when 33% said the nation was heading in the right direction. Iraq remains a key concern for the general public, as 28% of Americans said they consider Iraq to be one of the top two most important issues the government should address, up from 23% in April. The immigration debate also prompted 16% of Americans to consider it a top issue, down from 19% last month, but still sharply higher from 4% in March.

The only one in the admin with decent apprval ratings is the first lady. Which makes sense, since she doesn’t really do anything or make policy decisions, hence nothing to f*ck up. She leaves that job to her husband, and I must say, he is doing “a heck of a job.”

Wow, a poll indicates a “new low” for Bush, this one showing him 14 percentage points below the actual vote tally that put Clinton in office. I wonder if anyone was polled outside metropolitan areas (Democrat strongholds), or if it was necessary to “weight/adjust” the results. More of the gospel according to St. Polls, being used to influence opinions – rather than to measure opinions.
I’m headed out to join my neighbors in cutting up more trees from the tornado….after polling them for their opinion of which boots I should wear.

Sorry, Enkidu, but I’m actually a true 10 percenter (if you can figure that one out) who can formulate opinions independently.
Am I sad, sick and angry because only one Democrat has won the presidency in the last 30 years, or because both houses of Congress are in Republican control. The answer, obviously, is neither. I am sad, sick and angry with the lies and hate-mongering of losers, and it is time for change.
Treehugger, the only polls that have proven to be accurate are the ones conducted in voting booths. If polls were reliable, we would not have scores of them. Redundant, I know, but….polls are used to influence the opinions of weak, thoughtless people, not to measure public opinion. A classic example: If (exit) polls were accurate, John Kerry would have been elected in a landslide.

treehugger, the selective polling of some voters as they left the voting booth in Democrat stronghold precincts yielded false results, and could only be used to influence voters. Thankfully, this time, people still continued to cast their votes anyway (see reports RE: the Florida Panhandle, 2000).
Strangely enough, with an evenly divided party affiliation nationwide, the polls always seem to be “adjusted” because an excessive number of Democrats were polled…indicating that the polls are conducted almost exclusively in large-city populations where the populace is constantly beseiged with biased media reports assaulting the Bush administration. Also, we have to simply trust agenda-driven pollsters with regard to the number/percentage of Dems/Pubs they polled – and I certainly do not trust them.
I could certainly get contrasting results if I polled only people in rural, red-state areas, then adjusted the results as I saw fit for the imbalance of righties. Would you trust the results?
Yes, while I can find plenty of positive things to say about George Bush, it is necessary to make reference to Clinton and Kerry (and others) at times. Apologies if it makes anyone uncomfortable. Politics corrupts, and corruption is not exclusive to any one party.

iirc Polls are typically randomized and weighting is made to assure that the sample is evenly distributed both population and location wise. It is called Science, try it rather than the faulty intuition and blind belief that seems to be your guide in life. Plus the hatred of libs/dems/others, I suggest dropping that too.

treehugger: As a registered Republican, my opportunities for voting in the mostly-primary election were restricted to only two local offices – in both cases, I voted for a Democrat (Jason and Pam, if it matters). As I have stated many times, I long for a return of the old, honest Democratic Party.

Your sermon on the (S)cience of polling….If most of those polled are randomly selected from NY, CA, MA, etc., then, even if the results are weighted “to assure that the sample is evenly distributed,” the result will be greatly skewed to the left – for many reasons – and, we are forced to trust the pollsters’ numbers used for the weighting factors. You choose blind belief in their honesty, this ossified half-wit does not.
To answer your first question: I visit only this liberal website, to bait (jerk the chain of) complete dim-wits. I do so only upon returning home from teaching, not while on the job.
Hatred of particular groups? Have someone read your posts to you, then look inward. Then, visit the DNC website and try to understand the word “tolerance.”

I hear the same “debate style” used by kids every day, and those who must resort to such childishness are almost always in the wrong. Yes, that is the idea if pollsters are actually trying to measure public opinion rather than attempting to influence it, and I find no validity to RNC polls for the same reason. Only suckers with no core values will buy their results without question.
To paraphrase myself from an earlier post, one can only find validity in polling results if he blindly trusts the pollsters’ credibility and goals without suspicion, and I cannot. I suppose the avowed leftist propensity for questioning disappears when you’re in bed with the pollsters and their agendas. Again, I state that if polls and pollsters were reliable and credible there would be no need for dozens/scores of them – a single one would suffice. I’ve no doubt that the agenda-driven, vitriolic hatred of the left has influenced many people, especially those in urban settings who are constantly battered with leftist media, but any poll that included a representative number of voters in the south and midwest would yield much different results than those we’ve been bombarded with in recent weeks.
The hatred, bigotry and intolerance of conservatives is minor when compared to those of your ilk (see your own posts). Apparently you’ve had another row with the dad whom you disrespect. As always, condolences to your family.

Look TV, the point is poll after poll shows the preznit at historic lows. Every poll. I think you have a problem with belief trumping reason, science and higher brain function. Every pollster isn’t out there making opinion, they are supposed to try to sample and analyse the opinion of the population at large. How they phrase questions is the less scientific aspect of polling, but straight up unambiguous questions like “approve… or disapprove… of the preznit’s performance” don’t seem to have an ideologial or partisan slant. Tho I am sure you can find some way to twist it into something you don’t like.
As to calling me childish and admonishing me for making fun of you (too easy really), perhaps you should check the end of your post where you bring up my father (whom i haven’t argued with in 25 years – I just try to keep my kids out of earshot when his bigotry shows [sorry but the “N word” isn’t polite discourse to me]). ps – my Mom is also doing great thanks! treehugger, I do question many decisions made by the Bush administration, with many responses from them in my files. I usually disagree with their response, but I prefer that to the response I received when I questioned the DNC prior to the last presidential election – an emailed worm designed to destroy my hard drive. Nice folks.
enkidu, chopping wood has nothing to do with Glorious Leader. We were struck by twin tornados and were lucky to only have $35,000+ damage to our “trailer,” but we lost about 100 oak and hickory trees that won’t be replaced in my lifetime, and I must clear the property. Unlike most of my neighbors, we are not forced to live in a rented trailer next to the home or a motel during repairs.
btw, the only man in our neighborhood who has done nothing yet to clear the debris from his property….had Kerry signs in his yard during the campaign. We offered to help, but he said he’s waiting for government assistance. Typical. He bought his home about 15 years ago with the proceeds from a lawsuit against the local school board.
The “N” word is inappropriate in any circumstances (including rap, from which I assume you shelter the kids), and I certainly don’t condone bombing abortion clinics or shooting doctors (or lawyers). School is out, yea! I can spend my days working to clear the property.
Yes, many areas of the earth are certainly feeling the effects of a warming cycle, with many other areas not experiencing the phenomenon. In the 1970s the doomsday-panicky activists were broadcasting their fears of a coming ice-age – did Carter over-adjust the thermostat? Perhaps they are incapable of studying cyclic warming/cooling trends of the past.
Melting glacier are causing hurricanes in the gulf? And I thought opposing fronts combined with warm water in the gulf caused them – silly me.
Personally, I’m ready for some typical seasonal warmth. We’ve not reached 70 degrees for the last 15 days, and jackets were required at the stadium last night for graduation ceremonies.
I can think of only one politician who has made a stupid statement advocating genocide for the opposing party, and my sentiments about him mirror yours for Jefferson, although I prefer a trial before sentencing. Cunningham is his own voice, not that of the Rethuglican Party. My wife is an Illinois native, and is forever repulsed by the Dhimmicrat Party corruption in Chicago by the Daly dynasty, although the citizens there continue to vote for them – or do they? – or does ballot-stuffing constitute corruption? – or does Daly/mob-style behavior constitute corruption? – or does mysterious discovery of “lost” ballots in WA state? Trying to avoid mention of Kennedy family bahavior….as a kid I was a fan of Jack and Bobby, but what happened to the rest of the family?

Racism: Most of the local Democrats – both black and white – are openly racist in both speech and actions. If I mirrored your propensity for attributing all ill-advised behavior to political affiliation, I would associate their racism with party policy – but I don’t believe that.
As I cut enough timber to load a truck, the black farmer on adjacent property behind us is taking it to the mill for lumber to rebuild his barn and sheds. I could sell it, as neighbors have done, but Mr. Hopson is in need. The back of his home had a tree speared through it. He and “the missus” were isolated, living in the remaining two rooms of their little shack, eating only toast for 5 days before I checked on him. Mr. Hopson was too proud to ask for food from the Red Cross, but they are now eating like royalty, with food provided by a local church until they get back on their feet. Using me as a single example, can it be said that all Republicans would do the same? Unfortunately, no; such generalizing would be false. I am merely following the dictates of my “beliefs” that neighbors should help each other
Only I and a few local Amish (my wife’s maiden name was Yoder, her ancestors Amish, so I had little problem securing help for Mr. Hopson) are helping him – and no public attention is being drawn to the neighborly efforts. As a First Responder, I am merely following the dictates of my “beliefs” that neighbors should help each other in time of need, as my son-in-law did in New Orleans a few months ago. The hugs from Mrs. Hopson are the only compensation or recognition my wife and I need.
None of the neighbors are using FEMA trailers, but I know nothing about the construction of their temporary, insurance-provided dwellings.

The world once experienced an Ice Age – so, did global warming begin with the election of 2000?
Why are many areas of the world not demonstrating effects of global warming, or does “global” not infer “world-wide”?
When the cyclic trend begins to reverse, and we experience the next trend of “global cooling,” will there be renewed panic over a new Ice Age?
Are the plans yet laid for blaming Rethuglicans when that time arrives?

as to global warming
– the Atlantic current (you know the one that warms both Olde and Neue Europe) is down 40% in the last 5 years
– the Arctic ice cap hasn’t formed for several years running now
– green house gases (including CO2) are at million year high concentrations
– unless there is some hidden carbon sink saving us, we need to do something concrete so that our grandchildren don’t inherit a world wrecked by greed, stupidity and ignorance.
There is no serious scientific debate about climate change. It is happening now. Have a nice day.

In my haste, I confused two fools – Barbara Boxer and Margaret Sanger. Sorry, although you probably don’t know who Margaret Sanger was, either. Let me help you – she was the devout racist who created The Negro Project, her Eugenic Plan for Black America. She led the way into the beautiful misnomer, “Women’s Right to Choose (genocide).”

The fact remains that no one forces anyone to have an abortion. I support every woman’s right to choose. Wiki is simply another opinionated blog site, disguised by a deceptive title. It’s somewhat entertaining, but not a neutral source for reference on any topic.
The topic was genocide via abortion. I fully support abortive measures in many circumstances (rape, incest, saving the mother’s life, instances in which the mother was a victim, etc.), but not simply as an “on-demand remedy” when the mother has made an unwise choice.
Historically, genocide has often been framed in the language of “choice”:
FINAL SOLUTION – The Nazis justified ethnic cleansing because Germany’s racial make-up was the choice of the people, also asserting Hitler’s rights of choice.
SLAVERY – Stephen Douglas was personally against slavery, but argued that it should be the states’ choice.
ABORTION – Genocide is not mandated (yet), it is a matter of personal choice.
With no valid basis for argument, and the narccicistic temptations too great to resist trolling, it makes sense that you would avoid the issue by discussing imaginary topics.

I concur that the increases match, as they surely did during the last cyclic warming trend. It has nothing to do either with beliefs or political preferences, but only an awareness of historical climate trends.

I’m not really paying attention, sorry. But in terms of the four questions I assume you’re referring to, here’s my knee-jerk reaction:

Nope.

Because the global climate is a very large-scale system, and the effects of human activity on it are gradual, and, at least so far, and at least in some respects, subtle.

If that happens, then yeah, probably. Which neither you, nor anybody else, is currently in a position to predict. And if that does come to pass, it doesn’t mean that short-sighted human activities weren’t involved in bringing it about, or that concerns about the effects of human activities on the global climate weren’t warranted.
“Are the plans yet laid for blaming Rethuglicans when that time arrives? ”
The impact of human activities on the climate is a real concern among responsible scientists, and it’s the kind of problem that gets harder and harder to deal with effectively the longer we postpone dealing with it. Meanwhile, the Republican party in the US has taken the lead in denying that the problem exists, and in working with the fossil fuel industry to put out bullshit to confuse the issue.
I’d say there’s no need to wait to blame them until later. Blame them now. They’re guilty.

Just one note regarding “global warmining”. The issues isn’t really “global warmining”, but rather global climate change. Human activities are affecting the way jet streams flow and a whole lot of other stuff. Global warming is just one aspect of global climate change.
That might help explain why you are experieincing cooler than normal temps in your area, TV, while the northern parts of arctic countries are receiving much warmer than normal temps.
A really bright guy, who some say is actually the 43rd president of the US, just released a ver clear, concise documentary on this subject. I suggest everyone watch it, then decide if you think human activity is a factor.
