Another Heartfelt Open Letter to Red-Staters

I’ve posted a few of these, but this is a good one, so I’m posting it, too: An explanation of a vote for Kerry.

  1. Brian Says:

Two things about this wonderfully written letter.First of all , he didn’t “run and hide”on 9/11. He was already in hiding for a month , since early August , when he was first told that an attack was coming and that airplanes could be involved. He just hid a little more securely that day. Had the attacks come on 10/11 , it would have been a two month vacation. Secondly , the writer blames the situation in Iraq on careless planning and and other adjectives meant to show incompetence. Nothing could be further from the truth. The situation in Iraq is due to careful planning and is the desired result of a highly compentent Bush regime. Wouldn’t have much need for an exit plan if you weren’t planning on exiting. They’ve wanted a foothold in the Middle East for quite some time now. They knew that anything less than a nuclear strike was going to result in a drawn out battle , just like with the Soviets in Afghanistan. The problem is the type of people who support Bush.In some ways they are , in one sense , like the people who we are at war with. RELIGIOUS FANATICS. And people like that you can’t reason with. As far as they are concerned , we(Kerry supporters) are no better than the Muslims. As Bush said. “You’re either with us or against us”.If there is a God , He needs to find someone else to speak through besides Bush

  2. Craig Says:

As I’ve said before, as long as people insist in defining each other in broad generalizations and easy stereotypes, the gulf between them will always seem unbridgeable. Insulating oneself in a cocoon of self-assuring beliefs about those who differ in opinion will help people sleep better under their blanket of righteousness, but does nothing to advance any clearer understanding of each other.

I suppose I could make it easy on myself by defining Democratic supporters in some Blue-State, hedonistic, counter-cultured, atheistic, Marxist-leaning, worldly-naive, mindset. However, I realize that a great many Kerry supporters are people not very different than me in terms of our daily lives, ambitions, hopes, dreams, and basic values. In most cases we just look at the ways to achieve such things in some different ways.

That’s not to say that there aren’t some stark differences at times, but it helps increase the odds of some future level of communication and understanding when we decrease the level of cartoonish characterizations.

  3. ymatt Says:

    My sentiments exactly, Craig.

  4. John Callender Says:

Without taking away from Craig’s main point, I don’t think he’s very representative of the red-staters who elected Bush to office. Craig gives evidence of being college-educated and a city-dweller, two groups that had large majorities vote for Kerry.

  5. Jimbo Says:

    Good job Craig!

As long as you’re not stereotyping Democratic supporters as hedonistic, counter-cultured, atheistic, Marxist-leaning and worldly-naive I’ll refrain from stereotyping Republican supporters as selfish, war-mongering religious bigots and lying hypocrites.

I’m certainly glad we can all agree there’s no need to insult each other with such cartoonish characterizations.

Again, thanks for making the effort. You’re comments have gone a long way to changing my opinion (whoops, “stereotype”) of Republicans.

  6. TunaFishKiller Says:

Ya know… you folks got it wrong…
I’m a fiscal conservative, Social Moderate, Religious Agnostic…
I voted for Bush from California of all places because I desire the west to stand up to Islam. Islam cannot be negotiated with. It must be defeated. Your great fear that Bush will eliminate abortion or social security and reinstate segregation will not occur. 12 years of Reagan/Bush41 did not bring this about and 8 years of Bush 43 won’t either. Why won’t this occur?… because most Republicans don’t want that. These arguments are growing weak in the face of reality. My fellow GOP’ers want true equality, a strong America that isn’t managed from the office of the corrupt Kofi Annan and opportunity that isn’t constrained by oppressive taxes. If you can’t figure this out… then Hillary won’t beat Guiliani/Candy in 08.

    Peace after Victory…

    TFK

  7. Jimbo Says:

    You’re gonna “defeat” a religion?

    You lose.

  8. ymatt Says:

Nobody wants to hand control to the UN. Some of us just want to stop actively pissing off the rest of the world for no good reason.

And I believe our “oppressive taxes” are among the lowest of any industrialized nation in the world.

  9. Icanclimbthat Says:

    “Islam cannot be negotiated with.”

    Neither can institutionalised ignorance.

  10. Patriot Says:

    “You’re gonna “defeat” a religion?”
    Yes.

    “Islam cannot be negotiated with.”
    “”Neither can institutionalised ignorance.””
    Remember STAR WARS?
Who’s the more ignorant, the ignorant Judeo/Christian bigot, or the ignorant anti-semetic anti-christian bigot who calls him one?

The islamo-facists CANNOT be negotiated with. They can only be defeated or victorious like they were on September 11th, when we learned that ignoring them makes them victorious.

“Nobody wants to hand control to the UN. Some of us just want to stop actively pissing off the rest of the world for no good reason.”
Your first point is simply not true, but your second point is, if you are including the islamo-facists in “us.”

“And I believe our “oppressive taxes” are among the lowest of any industrialized nation in the world.”
Which is a huge prooblem! There is no reason that the US Tax Freedom Day needs to be in April! That’s about a quarter of our incomes going to the government! It’s even worse elsewhere. Government waste and/or corruption is rampant in almost every government building in the world! How much is enough!?

“The problem is the type of people who support Bush.In some ways they are , in one sense , like the people who we are at war with. RELIGIOUS FANATICS.”
In that sense, they are just like the people I am in an intellectual war with: ANTI-RELIGIOUS FANATICS.

“And people like that you can’t reason with. As far as they are concerned , we(Kerry supporters) are no better than the Muslims. As Bush said. “You’re either with us or against us”.”
He was right. You are either with us or against us. You cannot be both. If you make anti-american statements then you are against us. I think you could be neither if you’re from another planet and haven’t decided yet, but not for long.

“If there is a God, He needs to find someone else to speak through besides Bush”
Who ever said that God speaks thru Bush!? Bush claims to be attempting to speak to God, not the other way around I understand. Bush isn’t and doesn’t claim to be different from any other Christian. I also try to invite God into my decision-making process, as does just about every other Christian on the planet. I don’t think Bush claims to be hearing voices….

Think objectively… was that a bigoted statement!? If a conservative said something like that against a progressive would you call her (the conservative – remember conservatives are not all male) a bigot?

Now for my rebuttal of the letter itself:
“I am a liberal. The funny part is, liberals have this reputation for living in Never-Neverland, being idealists, not being sensible.”
The funny part is, liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis do, and aren’t.

“But let me tell you how I see the world: I see America as one nation in a world of nations. Therefore, I think we should try to get along with other nations.”
    Yes…. AND!?
“Why aren’t they trying to get along with us?” is what I’d like to know. I think the United States is doing a great deal by hosting, and being the military backbone of the United Nations. We’re even multilaterally helping them keep their resolutions when they make empty threats.
I personally think that the US should negotiate with foreign nations on it’s own without inviting the UN. We did it for years before the formation of the UN and the UN has failed in it’s original mission. UN headquarters belongs in Geneva, Switzerland not New York, New York. Here’s for getting the UN out of the US and the US out of the UN!

“I see that gay people exist. Therefore, I think they should be allowed to exist, and be treated the same as other people.”

Think about the logic of that statement for a moment. My mental computer churned for only a few seconds and here is some sample output:

I see that murderers exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that rapists exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that islamo-facists exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that anti-semites exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that sexists exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that white supremicists exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that Nazis exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that Communists exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that animals exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that anti-Christian bigots exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.

OK, ok seriously now, after imposing my own philosophy on the results, here’s part of the list:
I see that Christians exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that ‘intolerant conservative bigots’ exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people.
I see that marrige exists. Therefore I think it should be allowed to exist and be treated as it always has been, with no reason for change!

“I see ways in which women are not allowed to control their own bodies. Therefore, I think we should give women more control over their bodies.”
No one thinks that women should not have contron over their own bodies. It’s their children’s bodies that we’re worried about.

I see that unborn BABIES exist. Therefore I think they should be allowed to exist and be treated the same as other people!

[up to this point, I have called myself “Me” but I am now donning the alias “Patriot”)

  11. Patriot Says:

I’m really glad that this site allows polite opposition rebuttals sometimes – unlike the Democratic Underground.

You know the Democratic Underground hurts the Democrat party more than it helps!? It’s an easy way for us conservatives to find out that the Democrat base is telling it’s politicians to do – or in other words how extreme the American psuedo-Commies really are.

(what happened to my “people exist” post? I don’t see it)

  12. enkidu Says:

    hey Patriot
you need to up your medication and actually READ your Bible rather than using it as a bludgeon to smite all who disagree with you

I don’t recall Dems (or as you so telling put it “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis”) calling the Reps traitors for hunting Clinton for 8 years. And lumping liberals in with commies and nazis may work on Fox, but it is insulting to real patriots. Our country was founded on dissent. YOU psychos are driving the wedge between left and right when we are all Americans, first and foremeost.

Get that thru your red-neck, microcephalic, belief-before-reason, bigotry infested hat rack.

May the ghost of “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis” FDR come over to your double wide trailer and KICK YOUR @$$

  13. Patriot Says:

“I don’t think you are. I don’t think you realize what you have done. And if anything happens to me or the people I love, I blame you. I wanted you to know that.”
Just like a Leftist. Always rudely blaming their problems on somebody else who isn’t involved.

Why not try to DEAL WITH THE PROBLEM by voting for someone who is dedicatied to KILLING THE TERRORISTS!!

May the US Military continue to kill people and break things!

  14. Jimbo Says:

    Welcome Patriot!

I can see from your insightful post that you’re a highly educated and intelligent person. To often we on the left are subjected to angry, bigoted, irrational war-mongering wingnut idiots on these blogs. It’s unfortunate because these rants tend to color our perceptions of the right. You sure showed us!

Anyway, thanks for disproving this hoary stereotype!

  15. Patriot Says:

this is one of the problems I have…. I can’t never tell when a progressive is being sarcastic or not. maybe I’m paraniod. So thanks…. I guess.

  16. Sven Says:

Why would you think he is being sarcastic? Unless perhaps you think you are an “angry, bigoted, irrational war-mongering wingnut idiot” who compares Democrats and Liberals to “psuedo-commies” or even “nazis” as you did.

  17. Patriot Says:

“hey Patriot you need to up your medication and actually READ your Bible rather than using it as a bludgeon to smite all who disagree with you”
Funny, when did I start randomly quoting scripture? As a rule, the only time I quote scripture is in response to a direct question about what scripture says.

“I don’t recall Dems (or as you so telling put it “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis”) calling the Reps traitors for hunting Clinton for 8 years.”
That’s funny, I do. Not all dems are liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis. Many of them are just ignorant. I believe that was aimed at the extremist leadership and much of the blue-in-the-face internet base.

Please notice that I didn’t say you guys were nessicarily psudeo-Commies, I said that many people who post on the Democrat Underground are. And I said people who go around making crude jokes at Christians are ignorant anti-semetic anti-christian bigots if anybody is.

“And lumping liberals in with commies and nazis may work on Fox, but it is insulting to real patriots.”
No more insulting than lumping Christians in with the islamo-facists.

I don’t think you understand the conservative intellectual strategy. You’d have a much better chance at winning elections if you did, so as a public service I’ll educate you:
Conservatives often say things they don’t mean. This is called playing Devil’s advocate. To prove Leftist arguments are illogical, we try to demonstrate that they are filled with absurdity. That absurdity is demonstrated by being absurd.
Go read some of the posts on this blog and the Democrat Underground, and compare them to my posts. Apart from their philosophy, they’re the same, aren’t they? Just as shrill and extreme.

“Our country was founded on dissent. YOU psychos are driving the wedge between left and right when we are all Americans, first and foremeost.”
Right, one religious group disagreeing with another, more oppressive, religious group.
“We are all Americans” is a phrase I like to use myself.
    Not blacks and whites.
    Not males and females.
    Not unions and management.
    Not rich and poor.
    Americans.
“Get that thru your red-neck, microcephalic, belief-before-reason, bigotry infested hat rack.”
I will consider my point made.

“May the ghost of “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis” FDR come over to your double wide trailer and KICK YOUR @$$”
Wow, no matter how hard I try, you people are worse!

Here is a question for you: What does Progressive mean?

  18. Patriot Says:

“May the ghost of “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis” FDR come over to your double wide trailer and KICK YOUR @$$”
    Ah, doublethink again.
Isn’t @$$-kicking what you hate Bush for?
Notice how politely I have refrained by calling demadonkeys jackasses.

  19. Sven Says:

Here is what a real patriot was doing last week:

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/12/2/213925/009

  20. Sven Says:

By contrast, there is our current president & his administration who can’t be bothered to attend one of our soldiers funerals, or even physically sign a KIA letter to a spouse or parent:

    http://www.sftt.org/cgi-bin/csNews/csNews.cgi?database=Hacks%20Target.db&command=viewone&op=t&id=101&rnd=5.562757471877733

  21. Sven Says:

Let me try a different link here. Hopefully this one works:

    http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=41604

  22. Patriot Says:

What would you be saying if Bush HAD gone to every military funeral?

That it was a political move.

Yet somehow, whenever Kerry does it, it is not.

    Doublethink.

  23. Patriot Says:

Excuse me, just couldn’t help also posting another response to this one:

    “May the ghost
of “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis” FDR come over to your double wide trailer and KICK YOUR @$$”

May the ghost of anti-“liberal/progressive/socialist/communist/nazi” Ronald Reagan come over to your drug dealership and kick yours.

FDR. Interesting topic. Question: Was the New Deal helpful or hurtful to America in hindsight?

  24. enkidu Says:

    thank you sven
I am sorry that bush stole this election – almost 4000 votes for bush in an Ohio precinct with 600 voters? just a glitch! pay no attention! further comment is sedition!

    as to patriot/bigot
seems like I struck a cord! yes you are a wingnut… you come here and call anyone to the left of newt gingrich “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis” (your nasty words, psycho) and then expect us to take your drivel seriously? please, stop huffing that RAID fogger and try to ween yourself off the meth. I am an American and you disgust me. Calling me a nazi just dishonors the thousands of dead americans who gave their all to defeat the rightwing got-mit-uns real world nazis.

Why is it when the right wing nutjobs spew venom and hatred it is ‘discussion’ and when a left winger repsonds with same its traitorous lies and doublethink?

w is for worst president ever. You can’t keep responding to every crisis with tax cuts for the wealthy. We have some of the lowest taxes in the world already! Clinton RAISED the taxes on the wealthiest Americans and we had the longest and strongest economic growth in US history under his watch. Oh and the national debt actually shrank under Clinton. He also did more for middle east peace, more for the country and more for the world than shrub ever will.

    FOAD, creep

  25. Sven Says:

You don’t know me to say what I would think if Bush actually showed some courage and compassion by actually attending a funeral of one of our soldiers. I do appreciate you labeling your posts with the Orwellian “doublethink,” however. Thank you for that honesty. Now we know where you are coming from: the land of fiction.

  26. Patriot Says:

“You don’t know me to say what I would think if Bush actually showed some courage and compassion by actually attending a funeral of one of our soldiers.”
    THAT’S showing courage and compassion!?
Typical liberal. Saying you care is all that matters. Not actually DOING things like supporting the war they fought in instead of the murderous dictatorships of the enemy.

“I do appreciate you labeling your posts with the Orwellian “doublethink,” however. Thank you for that honesty. Now we know where you are coming from: the land of fiction.”
No, actually I was thinking of the Communist Dialectic, but more people have heard of Orwell’s “doublethink.” So maybe that was actually an unintended insult on my part to YOUR intelligence. Sorry.

Try comparing the “struggles” page of the Communist Party USA web site to the “values” of the Democrat Party: “http://cpusa.org/”
I think my problem is that I’m having trouble finding major differences between the two.

  27. Sven Says:

Newsflash: Your guy won. You’d think you’d be happy, but instead you feel the need to come here and insult those who don’t agree with you. Perhaps you feel guilty about your vote. You can continue to worship your president all you want.

“Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.”
    – President Thomas Jefferson

As to labeling me a liberal. Thanks. I try to be open minded and compasionate, but don’t always succeed. Somehow it’s O.K. for Bush to call himself a “compasionate conservative”, but liberal is used as an insult– “doublethink,” indeed. And for questioning my intelligence while knowing nothing about me, you’ve earned a label of your own: asshole. Oh, how liberal of me.

Feel free to continue this conversation with yourself.

  28. Patriot Says:

No no, an UNINTENDED insult – I try to write for as large an audience as possible, even when posting on other’s blogs, and I had no idea whether you’d heard of dialectics or not, so I used the orwellian term.

As a matter of fact, I do not worship the President. I have major disagreements with some of his policies. I like his offensive strategy to go fight terrorism over there, but he’s let us down over here by not SEALING UP THE BORDERS! Neither canidate would talk about that issue for the entire campeign. It was the Elephant in the Bathtub that nobody wants to talk about. The best offense is a good defense, and Mr. Bush is ruining our country with his Swiss-cheese-borders policy and for not being tough enough on getting rid of illegal aliens – a group whom we have no idea whether are terrorist or not.

In 2000, I didn’t support Bush in the Republicrat primary. I wanted Allan Keyes. I think the Republicrats would have been much better off trying to elect a black conservative. It would immunize them against these groundless charges of racism. Well, too many people thought it would be really cool to elect a President’s son, so Bush got it, and I voted for him to get rid of the socialist canidate Gore. Bush, who seems to spend half his time trying to make friends with the Demacommies, (I think that’s what he’s talking about with this “compassionate” crap) has filled his cabinet with minorities. Which is great, except now that his cabinet is being rearranged, he may be throwing out that strategy, which I think is a shame.

I think if the President, now that he has a clear majority of the American people behind him, should push ahead with conservative agenda, but he still seems to think he’s running for office. Bad, bad, bad….

I found it hard to disagree with Mr. Kerry, because he was into the dialectic. Therefore, I decided to vote for Mr. Bush and told everyone else who didn’t know who/what to vote for to vote for Kerry because he didn’t know either.

I’m one of those political junkie types – the 2008 campeign starts now didn’t you hear?

    hahahahaha

  29. Patriot Says:

“I am sorry that bush stole this election – almost 4000 votes for bush in an Ohio precinct with 600 voters? just a glitch! pay no attention! further comment is sedition!”
it’s the same old story from you guys every time you don’t win. must have been cheating, of course, after all you’re the sole champions of tolerance! nobody could vote against that!

“w is for worst president ever. You can’t keep responding to every crisis with tax cuts for the wealthy.”
Who invented that old old washed-up has-been phrase?
Tax cuts are for everyone! If you pay taxes, the Republicrats want to give you a tax cut. Wealth creates jobs, jobs create wealth. Without wealth, the jobs disappear, without jobs, the wealth dissappears. TAX CUTS ARE WHAT CREATES JOBS, NOT WELFARE CHECKS.

    “as to patriot/bigot
seems like I struck a cord! yes you are a wingnut… you come here and call anyone to the left of newt gingrich “liberals/progressives/socialists/communists/nazis” (your nasty words, psycho) and then expect us to take your drivel seriously? please, stop huffing that RAID fogger and try to ween yourself off the meth. Why is it when the right wing nutjobs spew venom and hatred it is ‘discussion’ and when a left winger repsonds with same its traitorous lies and doublethink?”
You still don’t understand what I’ve been doing. I’m trying to prove that the Left is lying when it proclaims tolerance – you lefties only tolerate OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE TOLERANT, or in other words, AGREE WITH YOU. When someone comes along who is intolerant, you are nearly always MORE intolerant than they are. The responses to my politically-incorrect comments prove this.

  30. Patriot Says:

You know, maybe I ought to “continue this conversation with myself.”

I’ll do a point-by-point analysis of what has been said so far.

I see a title: “Open-Hearted Letter to Red-Staters.” I am intruiged, /Is a Lefty actually going to say anything NICE that doesn’t divide the country but brings it back together for once?/

But I am bitterly disappointed. It isn’t to “Red-Staters” at all – it’s only to fellow Lefties. “Boo hoo! We lost so they must have cheated! It’s all BUSH’S FAULT! WAH!” That’s logic for you.

  31. Patriot Says:

You know, I thought the idea of attempting to use a Thomas Jefferson quote against me was hilarious. Let’s take a look at some of the OTHER right-wing stuff Jefferson was into:

    Being a political Christian:
“I have sworn upon the altar of God, eternal hostility against every
form of tyranny over the mind of man.” –Thomas Jefferson

    Taxes:
“Another means of silently lessening the inequality of property is to exempt all from taxation below a certain point, and to tax the higher portions of property in geometrical progression as they rise.” –Thomas Jefferson to James Madison
“It must be observed that our revenues are raised almost wholly on imported goods.” –Thomas Jefferson

On the Energy “Crisis”: (ie being able to drill for oil in alaska to make gasoline)
“A truth, too, not to be lost sight of is, that no country can pay war taxes if you suppress all their resources. To keep the war popular, we must keep open the markets. As long as good prices can be had, the people will support the war cheerfully.” –Thomas Jefferson

The War on Terror: (including IRAQ!)
“I feel assured that no American will hesitate to rally round the standard of his insulted country in defense of that freedom and independence achieved by the wisdom of sages and consecrated by the blood of heroes.” –Thomas Jefferson: Reply to Georgetown Republicans
“A nation united can never be conquered… The oppressors may cut off heads after heads, but like those of the Hydra, they multiply at every stroke. The recruits within a nation’s own limits are prompt and without number, while those of their invaders from a distance are slow, limited and must come to an end.” –Thomas Jefferson to John Adams

No doubt you can retaliate with more quotes, but oh well.

  32. Arkalane Says:

Maybe you should look at another “letter to red-staters”, just for balance.

    Open Letter to a “Red-Stater”

  33. Patriot Says:

    That was actually funny.
    Honestly – no sarcasm here.

You Lefties will never win elections until you understand that you do not have a monopoly on being intellectual.

  34. Patriot Says:

Here is another thought to consider:
How would FDR have fought terrorism?

He would probably have put all Muslims/Arabs in containment camps just like we did with the Japs when they were the problem.

  35. Patriot Says:

    Logical error detected.

“So as I was saying, we actually think about why we vote for a presidential candidate. We don’t let some preacher or wizard or whoever it is you listen to tell us who to vote for, so it’s just not fair that your votes cancel ours out.”

Isn’t that exactly what is being done (only jokingly of course) by the person writing the letter? What about the …. Reverend Jesse Jackson?

“So the next time there’s an election for President, this is what I want you to do: Vote for the Democrat. Can you remember that? Democrat. Please write it down somewhere, or get someone else to write it down for you or whatever, but keep it in a place where you can find it before the next election.”

    Now, more seriously:

“We’re the ones who take time to really study the issues – and if you don’t know what issues are then buy a dictionary – and if you don’t know what a dictionary is, then ask someone!”

I’m afraid that that is simply not true – my being here disproves that.

  36. TeacherVet Says:

My posts are apparently no longer being accepted. This is a test to see if I can sneak one through on an older thread. Go, Patriot.

  37. Patriot Says:

It seems that Republicrats are the only ones really interested in dictionary definitions anymore anyway.

They are very concerned with the definitions of words, realizing as did George Orwell when he wrote /1984/ that whoever controls the language controls the people.

We’re mostly concerned with words like “marrige” and “property” and other such important words whose definitions are being subtly changed by the political Left.

Mr. Kerry tried to change several definitions to create a sort of neo-Newspeak, such as “war hero” “medals” “ribbons” and “liar” (ironically aiming that word at his opponent)

Whereas, the Left’s politically correct Thought Police have only managed to change the definition of the word “Gay.”
