Barlow Thinks Outside the Box on Iraq

John Perry Barlow offers a heavy dose of reality as to future prospects in Iraq: Exit strategies.

“Well,” he sighed, “no one’s going to take this idea seriously, but here’s what I would do. I would free Saddam and tell him to go form a new government.”

That got my attention. “You’d do what?”

Barlow suggests giving the Kurds an independent state, and so what if the Turks scream? I’ve had a similar idea, except you also split the Shites from the Sunnis and oversee a 60-day buffer period to arrange land swaps for people to emigrat out of an area where they would be in the minority if they so choose. So you would have three countries, and the US would provide air cover against incursions by neighbors. Then get the soldiers the hell out.

    Shiites, not Shites. Sorry.
