Dowd on Bush, Allawi

From Maureen Dowd in the New York Times: Dance of the Marionettes:

It’s heartwarming, really.

President Bush has his own Mini-Me now, someone to echo his every word and mimic his every action.

For so long, Mr. Bush has put up with caricatures of a wee W. sitting in the vice president’s lap, Charlie McCarthy style, as big Dick Cheney calls the shots. But now the president has his own puppet to play with.

Face The Nation were trying to hoist Ted Kennedy on Kerry ‘undermining the credibility of an ally.’ Ted couldn’t come right out and call Allawi Bush’s puppet, even though everyone knows he is. I once read that somewhere in Papua New Guinea one of the tribes had a word: mokita. It means ‘that which everyone knows and agree not to talk about.’ The crazy uncle in the attic, the molester priest, the deficit, the War on Terra going down the tubes, all mokita.

What (sometimes) happens is that everyone decides the mokita topic is fair game, on the table. This is when sea changes happen. The overall effect can be shocking, rapid. Like when everybody east of the Elbe River suddenly decided communism was a flop. The Wall came down almost overnight.
