McSweeneys’s has a store in San Francisco and one in Brooklyn, which I have seen. It is like no other, and you’ll simply have to see it yourself to understand why. I can’t explain adequately. It’s like a jewel box, tiny and perfect in its beauty. There was a little band playing, an audience of about eight, and there was not room for another human body. Very odd things are offered at completely random prices, and there are very small drawers containing humorous dioramas. This is the sort of thing that makes big-city people think the heartland is boring and not too bright; because all too often it is.
