Winston Smith’s Orson Scott Card Story

I neglected to link to it last week when I first read it, but I think it’s interesting, especially if you like (or dislike) Orson Scott Card: The view from parallel Earth.

Interesting, too, the way Winston Smith thinks the post is not worth reading.

Hrm… I don’t quite know what to say to that. Smith isn’t the best writer, that’s for sure, and when trying to discredit someone to an intellectual audience, saying they’re “FoS” (full of shit) or that they’re “spewing feces” is going to damage your own case as much as theirs.

Smith does have some good points, allbeit unoriginal. Card does have some valid things to say, and by quoting out of context (as so many do) I don’t feel Smith gave him a fair representation.

I don’t particularly care for Card’s views which are somewhat unrealistic and biased (though intially based on solid ideas), but he deserves to be listened to as much as anyone else. As for Smith, this is the first I’ve read of him so my opinion may be a touch brash at this point. He comes across as an angst-ridden sci-fi fan writing for a social studies class, and little else — as a result I’m putting him into the same category as Card.
