/nan’-oh-tek-no”l*-jee/ Any fabrication technology in which

objects are designed and built by the specification and

placement of individual atoms or molecules or where at least

one dimension is on a scale of nanometers.

The first unequivocal nanofabrication experiments took place

in 1990, for example with the deposition of individual xenon

atoms on a nickel substrate to spell the logo of a certain

    very large computer company.

Nanotechnology has been a hot topic in the hacker subculture

ever since the term was coined by K. Eric Drexler in his book

“Engines of Creation”, where he predicted that nanotechnology

could give rise to replicating assemblers, permitting an

exponential growth of productivity and personal wealth.

Well, I went to the Docker’s website- http://www.us.dockers.com – but found no mention of ‘nanotechnology’ in any of their pants with Stain Defender TM technology.

Even Dupont’s website simply refers to the pants as part of the ‘new techno-clothes’. (http://www1.dupont.com/NASApp/dupontglobal/corp/index.jsp?GXHC_gx_session_id_=90a28e5e36ce28fe&GXHC_lang=en_US&GXHC_ctry=US&page=/content/US/en_US/news/daily/2002/dn12_09_02c.html) However, if you look further, into simply the coating, DuPont is willing to give a breakdown of ‘How it Works’, complete with why they call it Nano. http://www.dupont.com/teflon/fabricprotector/how/index.html

Maybe Docker’s wised up. Maybe they’re legal department finally saw what marketing was doing and had a hissy fit. Maybe they figured out that the American public shys away from clothing involving too many big scary words.
