In comparison to some of the liberal rants I’ve read or heard about on campuses this summer, this speech was reasonably thoughtful and well-stated. I can ignore the little sideswipe at Bush regarding the WMD.
I do, however, tire of the standard line of how the white males of this country are responsible for perpetuating all the evils and injustices that scar this land, and are responsibe for making things right. That simplistic thinking creates further divisions by encouraging bitterness and defensivness on one side and a sense of victimization and entitlement, without any personal responsibility or stake in the matter, on the other side.
The sooner we stop emphasizing the endless cycle of labeling people as either oppressors or victims, and get on with the realization that WE ALL have a personal obligation to make our lives, and the lives of those around us better, the sooner we can move forward as one country and raise the expectations of opportunity for everyone.
(I’d better get off my high horse here, ’cause I am starting to hear a choir humming “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” as I read this!!)
