I can’t believe that people are buying this… a pill that releases the pigmentation in the melanocites may be “safer” than UV-B rays, but consider the potential for a myriad of side effects that the manufactures won’t admit to or are unable to forsee.

Additionally, the irresponsibility of the creators of the Barbie drug…saying that a tan is healthy, and that those who work outside are at low risk for Skin Cancer–both are fallacious and outright FALSE!!!! If you want definitive information about Skin Cancer–the facts–contact organizations such as the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Cancer Society, the Skin Cancer Foundation, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and even Nasa.gov.

Skin Cancer claims more than a million Americans annually. There is NO such thing as a healthy tan, and the FDA has even said this so if they were to approve it they are not only propogating this pop culture notion that to look good is far more important than being holistically healthy, they are also hyprocrites!

Ms. White, please re-read those websites yourself. A tan is not the cause of skin cancer. It is however, how quickly the tan is achieved that triggers the formation of cancerous cells. For instance, those who work in the sun as opposed to those who use a tanning bed or similar device. People who work outdoors and see the sun everyday are at a LOW risk for skin cancer.

  39. Anonymous Says:

I want to clip the dumbass who said there was no such thing as a healthy tan. Do you even know what is assumed to be the cause of skin cancer? UV rays, but it’s rays UVB and either UVA or UVC, I forgot which is which, lets just say it’s UVA. Which is normally blocked out by the ozone layer due to the chemical reactions in the upper stratosphere. UVB and UVC aren’t strong enough to cause a chemical reaction in the stratosphere so they leak down to the earth’s surface. Over exposure is the equivalent of getting cooked, thus causing skin cancer, therefore people who like to go out a lot should have some form of protection, such as sun block. And people towards the southern hemisphere should be more caution about spending time outdoors because of the ozone hole that developed towards the south pole. Weaker ozone layer, more UVA rays can leak thru, thus being more harmful. Having tan skin could help reduce your risk of getting skin cancer, but it’s “reduce” not eliminate. The thing he said about those who work outside are NOT at low risk of getting skin cancer is true. The more time you spend outside, the longer you cook yourself, the longer you cook yourself, the more cooked you would be, unless you can somehow shield yourself from all the UV rays, or radiation. But there are such things as a healthy tan, being tan is normally associated with being healthy simply because the sun helps your skin generate vitamin D, which is good for your body, and available in assorted selections of milk. The air outdoors is generally cleaner than the air indoors if you lived in a non-metropolitan area and are not effected by combinations of drifting air pollution and geographical boundaries concentration air pollution… Generally, by being outdoors more, you exercise more, you’re more active, and as a consequence of everything, you get more tanned; natural tan, those you get from a UVC tanning machine might tan your skin, but that’s all it’s doing, it’s not as strong as UVA and UVB rays, so the relative risk is lower.

Most of you are misinformed about the drug known as Melanotan. I’ll give you a little background and point you on the right path. First off, Melanotan is not a pill. It is a synthetic hormone developed to mimic a naturally occuring hormone called alpha-MSH that your body normally produces in response to damaged DNA (caused by ultra-violet radiation). There is no oral form of the drug because the stomach acid in your body would disrupt it completely using that delivery method. Instead, it was first applied via daily injections. Since then, the delivery mechanism has been improved and is being tested as a one-time, slow-release implant made from the same material as biodegradeable stitches.

Alpha-MSH stimulates the melanocyte cells in your body to produce melanin, which is what gives you a tan. It is the body’s protective reponse to damage. To the person who said there is no healthy tan, you should check your facts. A tan is healthy. A sunburn which causes the tan is not. Here is where Melanotan enters the picture. This drug skips the step that causes the tan (i.e., the burn phase) and goes right to producing the tan naturally.

The reason why Melanotan got its nickname as The Barbie pill or drug was because the researchers who originally developed it, tweaked it to become even more potent. They found that it would not only give you a tan, but also cause an erection in men, and promote weight loss by decreasing the desire to eat while active in the body.

Serious research is still ongoing and the FDA is involved, so this is a reality. The drug was discovered 12 years ago and in a few years, it will be on the market in prescription form. There are two companies developing it. One for tanning http://www.epitan.com.au and the other for libido enhancement http://www.palatin.com

Hope that clears up some of the misinformation going around.

In The Groove – your link isn’t working for me; can you give me the address to your forum, please? Either email me or post it on here.

endymion96 – Thanks for that clarification. I have a question – if supplementing alpha-MSH causes a tan, does getting a tan cause increased levels of alpha-MSH? I read somewhere that sunburn increase alpha-MSH, but maybe I misunderstood. The reason I’m interested is I have CFS, and MSH is also being developed to treat this (a company called Zengen is testing an MSH peptide as an anti-infectious and anti-inflammatory treatment). Epitan does not plan to release its product until 2007, and I am getting so desperately tired and weak…I thought maybe working on getting a suntan could help raise my MSH levels(I tan easily but am don’t go outside now because I’m so tired). If you have any info that would help, I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

Hi everyone, it will be interesting to see what happens with this drug, I’m not sure it will be available freely for people to use cosmetically. It will be a prescription drug, and I gather it will be regulated quite tightly, at least to start with. The main medical application at the moment is to prevent skin cancer.

that on one hand you pave the way for the next ungodly onslaught of ridiculous fixer upper pills from the drug companies to adjust things
that the human race has got by with quite adequately for millions of years, and on the other you also create future problems by dropping god knows what kind of inorganic chemicals into the human genepool and bloodlines.Have you seen the genetic material of modern children?do you have any idea how thalidomide babies were created?probably not,
and if you did you probably dont give a flying fuck, cos youre too preoccupied with wanting guys to drool over youre plastic moulded
uncharismatic body,so you can feel normal or pander to whatever other insecurity haunts whats left of youre soul.thank god for natural selection.

  76. Answer to Anonymous Says:

Anonymous, you are an idiot. You probably lament the invention of the lightbulb and electricity because, “who are we to think we can fool with nature?” Man’s struggle has always been to conquer nature and modify it to his needs. So, to the makers of this new pill, I say more power to you. If it can safely cause natural melatonin to develop a tan that acts as a UV 4-8 protection, it will lessen skin cancer, especially if you use it in conjunction with suntan lotion when out for extended periods.

You’re probably the same kind of idiot that caused DDT to be banned without any real proof of its harmful effects. Now, millions die each year in Africa and the Far East because of hobbit-loving, tofu sucking, head-in-the sand a-holes like you that think all progress is bad, as they type on their home pcs, in their air-conditioned homes, flipping the remote from one ball game to another. You’re a hypocrite, go back and stick your head in the sand (or up your bum), moron.
