In late 1995, impressed by http://suck.com and with visions of net-moguldom dancing in his head, JohnCallender registered the domain lies.com, and set about creating the first version of this site, which you can browse at http://www.lies.com/old.html.

In its original form, the site consisted of essays written by JohnCallender and TheWebWalker, with the former's contributions tending toward snotty commentary on various things he felt like commenting on (see, for example, http://www.lies.com/mar96/030496.html), and the latter's contributions tending toward ultra-right-wing ravings about the 1996 U.S. presidential campaign (see, for example, http://www.lies.com/mar96/033196.html).

After the '96 election things slowed down on the site, and that might have been the end of it, except for the unintended incentive provided by GeorgeRafter, who tried to use unfounded claims of trademark infringement to take the site's domain name. See LiesDotComDomainDispute for more on that.

Thwarting Rafter's attempt gave Callender a new interest in the site, leading to his posting some additional essays at http://www.lies.com/jun97/062097.html, http://www.lies.com/dec97/121897.html, and http://www.lies.com/sep98/092598.html.

In March of 2002, casting around for an excuse to play with slash, the code that runs http://slashdot.org/, Callender converted lies.com to run as a slash site. http://www.lies.com/ is as good a place as any to see how that experiment is proceeding.

In September, 2002, he added this wiki.

In October, 2002, he converted the weblog portion of the site from running under [slash] to running under [Movable Type].

The rest of the site's history hasn't been written yet. So write some!
