Living on a Really Expensive Boat

From Rohirrim, via Natrooski's TV-viewing habit, comes one of those stories I'd be much more up on if I only stared at the tube more often: life aboard The World, a mega-luxurious cruise-ship-cum-floating-home. You can buy a decent-sized residence aboard the ship for somewhere between $2.5 million and $7.5 million, or, if you're tight for cash, you can rent for $2K to $4K per day. I've never been one to obsess about the lifestyles of the rich and famous, but browsing through the descriptions of the amenities on this thing, I confess I found myself boggling at the thought of what life aboard her must actually be like.

Tanya Hadden Sentenced

The schoolteacher who lit out for Vegas with her 15-year-old student has been sentenced. Sad story. She got a longish prison sentence, which the judge suspended and converted into six months in jail (which is almost done, counting time served since her arrest) plus 5 years' probation. So she'll be back on the street in a month or so - or would be, except that when she gets out of jail in Nevada she's probably going to be extradited to California, and tried again there. Good to see our criminal justice system is keeping on top of things, eh? I know I feel safer.

Hard to know quite how to classify this one, but if you're a fan of both Tolkien and wacky Web-based obsessions (and who isn't?), it's a must-see: The Library of Moria, where two self-described "youngish heterosexual women" present everything you ever wanted to know (and much, much more) about every possible homosexual pairing of the characters in the Lord of the Rings.

Winona Plea Deal Dead; Trial Date Set

Despite breathless predictions to the contrary from certain tabloids that shall remain nameless, there will be no plea bargain in Winona Ryder's shoplifting case. The trial is set to commence October 7. Man, what a fall season we've got lined up: new albums from Peter Gabriel and U2, the extended-edition FOTR DVD and The Two Towers theatrical release, and the Winona trial.
Rowling Wins Big in Court

J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, won a lopsided victory over a woman who claimed that key elements of the books were stolen from her own, previously published works. Branding the plaintiff a liar, the summary judgement dismissed the suit, fined the plaintiff $30,000, and ordered her to pay a portion of Rowling's legal fees. Ouch.

In a nice example of how easy it is to convince people not to believe their own eyes, our government has managed to pretty thoroughly conceal the evidence of a missile having been involved in the explosion of Flight 800 off Long Island a few years back.
