Ted Rall continues to kick ass. Check out his latest piece, in which he spoofs the current round of charges and counter-charges regarding just whose weapons of mass destruction represents a danger to the world community.

From Jason comes this cool series of photos showing a woman unwittingly driving into a puddle that swallowed her car. Yay for amateur photojournalism.

Britney Brought to Bear Against Music Sharing

from the combined-Britney-AND-RIAA-story dept.

You knew it was coming, but in a new series of commercials, a number of artists with enormous record contracts -- including our lass Britney -- will be letting their fans know that music sharing is the same as stealing CDs. I think I'm actually more frightened of Britney pouting at her fans over music sharing than I am of all the RIAA lawsuits.

Living on a Really Expensive Boat

from the see-the-world-on-pennies-a-day.-a-LOT-of-pennies. dept.

From Rohirrim, via Natrooski's TV-viewing habit, comes one of those stories I'd be much more up on if I only stared at the tube more often: life aboard The World, a mega-luxurious cruise-ship-cum-floating-home. You can buy a decent-sized residence aboard the ship for somewhere between $2.5 million and $7.5 million, or, if you're tight for cash, you can rent for $2K to $4K per day. I've never been one to obsess about the lifestyles of the rich and famous, but browsing through the descriptions of the amenities on this thing, I confess I found myself boggling at the thought of what life aboard her must actually be like.

Gore's Speech

from the study-in-contrasts dept.

So, the "Gore in '04" campaign got off to a nice, if unofficial, start yesterday, with Al's speech on the dangers of dubya's newly articulated naked-aggression policy. Good stuff. Give us more, big guy.

Buzz Gets Off

from the followups dept.

Displaying unusual common sense, authorities in California have decided not to prosecute former astronaut Buzz Aldrin for punching a skeptic who wanted him to swear on a Bible that he actually had been to the moon. Nifty.

Tanya Hadden Sentenced

from the love+bad-judgement=jail dept.

The schoolteacher who lit out for Vegas with her 15-year-old student has been sentenced. Sad story. She got a longish prison sentence, which the judge suspended and converted into six months in jail (which is almost done, counting time served since her arrest) plus 5 years' probation. So she'll be back on the street in a month or so - or would be, except that when she gets out of jail in Nevada she's probably going to be extradited to California, and tried again there. Good to see our criminal justice system is keeping on top of things, eh? I know I feel safer.

The Library of Moria

from the this-isn't-a-mine;-it's-a...-actually,-I-don't-know-what-this-is dept.

Hard to know quite how to classify this one, but if you're a fan of both Tolkien and wacky Web-based obsessions (and who isn't?), it's a must-see: The Library of Moria, where two self-described "youngish heterosexual women" present everything you ever wanted to know (and much, much more) about every possible homosexual pairing of the characters in the Lord of the Rings.

Winona Plea Deal Dead; Trial Date Set

from the wrong-again,-dammit dept.

Despite breathless predictions to the contrary from certain tabloids that shall remain nameless, there will be no plea bargain in Winona Ryder's shoplifting case. The trial is set to commence October 7. Man, what a fall season we've got lined up: new albums from Peter Gabriel and U2, the extended-edition FOTR DVD and The Two Towers theatrical release, and the Winona trial.

Rowling Wins Big in Court

from the take-that,-muggle dept.

J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, won a lopsided victory over a woman who claimed that key elements of the books were stolen from her own, previously published works. Branding the plaintiff a liar, the summary judgement dismissed the suit, fined the plaintiff $30,000, and ordered her to pay a portion of Rowling's legal fees. Ouch.

from the forbidden-thoughts dept.

From Salon, via Hiro, comes this really interesting selection of emails people sent in describing their secret heresies in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. Here at we revel in the general editorial principle of pointing out the shortcomings and wrong doings of the good ol' USA. Today we're going on a little world tour to take our minds off the whole USA/terrorists/Iraq issue and examine some poor behavior in Russia, Kashmir, and Guatemala.
The international news is cool.

Buzz Aldrin Punches Skeptic

from the right-stuff dept.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, famous as the second human to set foot on the surface of the moon, punched a lunar-landing skeptic recently after getting fed up by the guy's repeatedly thrusting a Bible at him, telling him to swear on it that he'd actually made the Apollo 11 journey. Buzz Aldrin is cool.

Flight 800 Coverup Persists

from the pay-no-attention-to-that-missile-behind-the-curtain dept.

In a nice example of how easy it is to convince people not to believe their own eyes, our government has managed to pretty thoroughly conceal the evidence of a missile having been involved in the explosion of Flight 800 off Long Island a few years back. This article summarizes some of the smoke and mirrors involved in that process.
